What is a DEX?

Trading on a Decentralized Exchange (DEX) is quite different from using a Centralized Exchange (CEX) in several key ways, especially when it comes to control, privacy, and how trades are executed.

To get started trading on a DEX, you need to set up a crypto wallet like MetaMask or Trust Wallet. You can learn more about wallets here. This wallet is where you’ll store your cryptocurrencies and connect to the DEX. Once connected, you can choose which tokens you want to trade (known as trading pairs) and make your trades.

Unlike centralized exchanges, DEXs like LFJ don’t hold your funds, so you maintain full control over your assets. You can place orders to swap tokens instantly (a market order) or set a target price (a limit (place) order) and wait for the right moment.

Every trade on a DEX will come with a fee, this can range from as little as 0.01% up to 1%. The fee is paid directly to liquidity providers with a small amount also distributed to JOE token stakers. The cost of swapping is highly competitive on the LFJ DEX, thanks to the underlying products that facilitate swaps. Often you'll find, swap rates can be more competitive v trading on a CEX.

In short, DEX trading gives you more freedom, you get to access tokens in a fully onchain environment and you retain full custody of those tokens so there is never any custody risk from the exchange.
